Long-term counselling

By appointment only

Everyone requesting long-term counselling is asked to come for an initial assessment. The assessment interview normally lasts about an hour but can sometimes take a little longer. It is an opportunity for you to discuss with the assessor how counselling might help with the problem you are bringing and whether or not The Metro Centre is the right service for you. If it is appropriate you will be told at the assessment and placed on the waiting list for a regular weekly appointment.

If The Metro Centre is not appropriate to your needs, the assessor will give you information on where to find other forms of help. Please note that your assessor will not be your counsellor for subsequent counselling sessions.

Following the initial assessment interview we sometimes suggest a further interview. Please don’t be concerned if this is the case, it is to enable us to make a more informed and careful decision.

Owing to pressure on our resources we have a waiting list for counselling sessions. Once an appointment becomes available at a time to suit you, you will be contacted (this will usually be by letter unless you have specified otherwise). We will then expect you to confirm you acceptance of this appointment. If the appointment is not confirmed then the time will be offered to the next person on the list. Each session lasts 50 minutes and once you have accepted you will be expected to see your counsellor on the same day and time each week. This can be for a duration of up to 1 year. All counselling sessions take place at The Metro Centre.

How much does it cost?
As a charity we do rely, to some extent, on contributions from the people who use our service. Each session costs us about £30 to provide and we do ask for a payment for each session.
We are aware that everyone’s circumstances are different even when you are working, so anything that you can reasonably afford is most welcome.
However, not everyone is working, so as a guideline we suggest a contribution of £3 per session if you are not waged.
Please do not have any concerns over this as it can be discussed with the counsellor and a mutually acceptable agreement will be reached.
A counsellor will still see you even if your circumstances mean that you cannot afford to make any contribution.
